KURT ELLING " SUPERBLUE "

Dopo aver ottenuto il suo secondo GRAMMY Award (e la 14a nomination) nel marzo 2021, il cantante proteiforme Kurt Elling fa un'inaspettata svolta a sinistra con SuperBlue per Edition Records. È un torrente di funk chiassoso, ritmi indelebili e testi fin troppo attuali che vanta il talento del produttore-chitarrista Charlie Hunter e di due star della generazione hip-hop: il batterista Corey Fonville e il bassista-tastierista DJ Harrison (entrambi del genere -banda saltellante Butcher Brown). Elling è sempre stato un maestro dei groove, dal bebop al pop puro, dal jazz progressivo al neo-soul, ma non ha mai riempito un album di groove come questi. Grazie alla nuova melodia e ai testi di Elling, insieme a Hunter & co ., SuperBlue presenta canzoni completamente nuove, interpretazioni innovative di composizioni dei leoni del jazz Wayne Shorter e Freddie Hubbard, e un trattamento grezzo ed essenziale di "The Seed", un riff vecchio di decenni ancora dinamico su immortalità scritto da Cody Chestnutt. Per questo primo album di nuove registrazioni in quattro anni, James riunisce il suo Trio dall'Espresso del 2018 e registra ancora una volta il gruppo in studio. Ma invece di applicare attrezzature post-tracciamento, James ha scelto di catturare il trio mentre suonava proprio come farebbe in un club: dal vivo senza sovraincisioni o modifiche. Non c'è nuovo materiale qui, la scoperta viene da James & Co. che suona in questo formato brani del suo periodo funk-jazz classico degli anni '70 con alcuni vecchi successi radiofonici di pop star lanciati.Per un artista che ha fatto buona parte del suo nome con arrangiamenti lussureggianti e ampi e una produzione raffinata che gli è valsa l'etichetta "smooth jazzer" (a volte impiegato in modo derisorio, da persone che non conoscono i loro quarti posteriori da un buco nel terreno per quanto riguarda il suono di James), stanno venendo fuori molti lavori in trio di fine carriera di Bob James. Il 2018 ha visto l'uscita di Expresso (Evosound Records); e nel 2021 è stato pubblicato Once Upon A Time: The Lost 1965 New York Studio Sessions (Resonance Records), che ripercorre i primi giorni di James. HESHOO BESHOO GROUP "ARMITAGE ROAD"

Con un suono unico fondato su un mix persuasivo di jazz americano e africano, Armitage Road, originariamente pubblicato nel 1970, è stata l'unica registrazione in studio pubblicata dal gruppo sudafricano Heshoo Beshoo. In quanto oggetto da collezione molto apprezzato, una riedizione e una rivalutazione di questa gemma perduta dell'era dell'apartheid era attesa da tempo. Heshoo Beshoo traduce vagamente dal gergo inter-tribale delle township come "andare con la forza" o "muoversi con la forza". Questo è certamente il caso qui. Con il suo elemento innegabilmente funky, Armitage Road combina un gioco aggraziato e commovente con invenzione e passione, e non delude dall'inizio alla fine.L'artwork dell'album è stato ispirato da "Abbey Road" dei Beatles. The Business is an original funk band from New Orleans, Louisiana. Formed in 2012, the band forged its sound playing in clubs along Frenchmen Street, home turf to some of the finest young funk and jazz musicians in the nation. With such high level of talent on the scene, the Business had to work hard to set themselves apart.The resulting sound is rooted in a rhythm section that slides from slinky New Orleans grooves to ultra-tight west coast funk to "rocking your face off," and the transitions are seamless. BEAT FUNKTION "VOODOOLAND"

Beat Funktion was born in 2007 in the Swedish town of Uppsala, just north of Stockholm, as a temporary five-piece constellation for a number of spontaneous club gigs where traditional jazz music was needed for a young dancing audience. To shape the band's repertoire of old jazz standards, pianist Daniel Lantz took the liberty of borrowing inspiration from musicians and bands within groove-based genres in the 70s and late 60s, such as James Brown, Bob James, Eumir Deodato, Herbie Hancock, Roy Ayers, Fela Kuti, Curtis Mayfield, Lonnie Liston Smith, Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis, Cannonball Adderley and others, not to mention film music by composers like Lalo Schifrin and Bill Conti. This resulted in a series of original arrangements of jazz standards tailor-made for the band, which utilized the stable, dance-friendly and lush-sounding framework of pumping disco funk and R&B paired with the rhythmic and harmonic freedom of jazz improvisation. It became an immediate success with audiences, and accordingly, the very special jazz-funk sound of the band was born.After a number of overwhelmingly successful performances, enjoyed by listeners as well as dancers, the band became a permanent working unit and since 2008 it is an impressive six-piece-band consisting of Karl Olandersson on the trumpet, Olle Thunström on the tenor sax, Johan Öijen on the electric guitar, Daniel Lantz on the Fender Rhodes, Pal Johnson on the electric bass and Jon Eriksson on the drums. Although keeping a few classic funk cover tunes as part of the repertoire, pianist Daniel Lantz nowadays provides the band with new, groovy original music in the vintage 70s vein. Additional musicians like percussionists and vocalists occasionally join the band for more powerful live performances.In the autumn of 2010, Beat Funktion released their debut-album THE PLUNGE for Do Music Records, a production that has culled takes together from multiple previous studio and live recordings to form a whole. On the album, the sound of the band is enhanced with percussion, live acoustic strings, vocals and Moog synthesizers. It features a majority of Lantz' own compositions, plus a funk version of George Gershwin's classic jazz standard ”Summertime”. The disc has received praise worldwide with agents and reviewers of jazz, funk, soul and rare grooves, not to mention DJs. The band is currently scheduling their fourth album, MANDY'S SECRET, to be released in August of 2014, which will be co-produced by Daniel Lantz and pianist and producer Mats Björke from famed rock band Mando Diao. Kuckaw! is a brand spankin’ new band, fresh out of Oakland, California. The band members, all seasoned players in the Bay Area music scene, have come together through happenstance in order to fulfill one common goal: to get some Bay Area booties shakin’. Influenced by the music of Snarky Puppy, Herbie Hancock, Orgone, and Roy Ayers, Kuckaw!’s sound melds the driving, heavy rhythms of 70′s funk with the hypnotic, interlocking essence of Afrobeat, adding a touch of disco, and bringing the unwieldy abandon of a Zappa-esk musical odyssey. Adam Lowdermilk and Michael Wynar (both of Albino! Afrobeat), combined forces on bass and guitar respectively, with Ross Mcintire on drums (of DRMS), who is fresh off the Bayou from New Orleans.
