Nobody's Fool è il decimo album di Joanne Shaw Taylor da White Sugar del 2009. LITTLE MIKE AND THE TORNADOES "ALL THE RIGHT MOVES"

Queens native Little Mike grew up on the very competitive New York City music scene. He started playing harp at age 14 and took up piano two years later. His first brush with the blues came while hearing John Lee Hooker at Carnegie Hall and later listening to a Paul Butterfield record.After that Little Mike couldn't get enough. If a blues show was in New York City, Mike was there, especially when the Chicago players came to town. His favorite was Muddy Waters. "I used to go and see Muddy anytime he was within 150 miles of New York," he said. "He is easily the biggest influence on the band and my playing. And if it's not Muddy himself then it's the great guys he always picked to play with him, like Pinetop Perkins and Otis Spann on the piano or Little Walter and James Cotton on harp."Another musician Mike greatly admired was Paul Butterfield, who would regularly come and see Mike's band perform. He liked their old "Chess sound" and took Mike under his wing. Mike says, "He helped me become less of a blues purist, and more of a music purist. Paul opened up my playing and taught me to put my blues in other music forms, to make it very personal." Other influences cited include Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, the Rolling Stones, Jimmy Reed, Eddie Taylor, Sonny Boy Williamson, and Walter Horton.After leading a series of bands as a teenager, Mike formed the Tornadoes in 1978. At age 22, Mike was leading one of the busiest and toughest blues bands in New York City. Whenever a visiting blues artist came to town and needed a band, Little Mike and the Tornadoes usually got the call, backing artists such as Walter Horton, Otis Rush, Bo Diddley, Lightning Hopkins, and Big Mama Thornton. Mike's reputation led to the band's touring as the backing unit for blues legends such as Pinetop Perkins, Hubert Sumlin, and Jimmy Rogers.Little Mike and the Tornadoes proudly describe themselves as a "working class band" that plays blues with a rock 'n' roll edge. "We all come from working class families and tough, working class neighborhoods," says Mike. "Working class people have always been our biggest supporters." The album thrust the band out into the spotlight, where they began to tour almost non-stop across North America and Europe, establishing themselves as true road warriors.Little Mike's success led to a 1992 follow-up release entitled Payday. The material is once again all original and draws upon Mike's blue-collar upbringing and experience. Says Little Mike, "It's the best thing I've ever done. AMBER SWEENEY "LONE SAILOR"

Amber Sweeney is an accomplished soul/rock singer, songwriter, and recording artist who recently signed with Seattle based record label, London Tone Music, to release a single as part of their 52x52: A Year In Your Ear project. Her single “Lone Sailor,” produced by Geoff Ott, is due to release later this year. In 2013, Amber released two E.P.s: The Starting Line (April 16) and Christmas Time (November 28). LISA MANN "MOVE ON"

Powerhouse bassist and front woman Lisa Mann hails from the blues-steeped city of Portland, OR. She is currently the Cascade Blues Association's Female Vocalist of the Year and Bass Player of the Year, and her band is the Contemporary Blues Act of the Year. She and her aptly named “Really Good Band” have been mainstays of the Northwest music scene for several years, and have graced the stage at some of the finest blues events, such as the Waterfront Blues Festival, Bronze Blues & Brews, Untapped Blues Festival, Sunbanks and others. She was inducted into the Cascade Blues Association’s Hall of Fame in 2011 after winning the Muddy Waters Award for Bass Player of the Year for the third time in a row. She has received numerous nominations for Vocalist of the Year, winning in 2009 and 2012. In 2011, she and her Really Good Band represented the CBA at the International Blues Challenge, where they made it to the semi-finals. Lisa also won the Portland Music Award for Outstanding Achievement in Blues in 2012.Her influences run the gamut, from low down blues sisters Etta James and Koko Taylor, to singer-songwriters like Bonnie Raitt and Sheryl Crow, to R&B belters like Little Milton. THE REVIVALISTS "CITY OF SOUND"

Their bombastic showmanship is the outgrowth of a desire to connect with audiences on a personal level, and that intimate connection is what elevates their shows above simple entertainment.True to their name, The Revivalists lean more heavily on the older styles and warmer sounds of the golden age of rock ‘n roll, but the band isn’t afraid to dabble in electronics and sleight-of-studio when it’s right for the song.  The group tends not to bother with questions like “does this sound like us?” or “does this fit with our other stuff?”, instead allowing songs to define themselves and take shape organically, each on its own terms. BIG HEAD TODD & THE MONSTERS "BLACK BEEHIVE"

Big Head Todd & the Monsters spent much of the early years of the new millennium emphasizing their blues roots, going so far as to spearhead a centennial celebration of Robert Johnson in 2011, so the expansive nature of 2014's Black Beehive comes as something of a welcome surprise. BHTM haven't left the blues behind, of course -- there are funky slide guitar workouts like "Seven State Lines," along with a salute to the great Howlin' Wolf guitarist Hubert Sumlin -- but they've internalized the blues, letting it infuse songs that otherwise read as pop or lending a bit of grit to performances that otherwise favor comfort. This dexterity (demonstrated, as it should, through throwaway grooves and succinct solos), when combined with a production that boasts considerable color even during the record's quietest moments, gives Black Beehive a surprising resonance; unlike some BHTM records, this feels lived-in, which in itself is a reflection of how the band's sojourn into the blues has paid off dividends. They've returned to some of the easy, breezy melodic songwriting that gave them AAA hits in the '90s, but that tunefulness is given a backbone by the band's willingness to delve into the blues, and the production -- alternating between spare sweetness and sharply detailed, sculpted six-strings -- gives the album dimension (and Todd's decision to occasionally co-opt Dylan's phrasing, unmistakable on "Josephina" and "Travelin' Light," adds another dimension to this roots rock fantasia). Big Head Todd & the Monsters will never be a gutbucket, down-and-dirty blues-rock outfit, but Black Beehive proves that's fine: they have found their own friendly spin on the blues and have become a better band for it.  BIG HEAD TODD THE MONSTERS
 

TODD WOLFE BAND "MILES TO GO"

The Todd Wolfe Band recall the days when "men were men and amps were amps", real tubes crackling with a "bluesdelic" sound reminiscent of the best rock and roll bands of the 60's and 70's! This band with Roger Voss on drums and the stunning Justine Gardner on bass with former Sheryl Crow sideman, Todd Wolfe jams and rocks
but their music is deeply soaked in blues. They have established themselves as one of top POWER TRIOS in America by their relentless touring and spreading their legend from coast to coast and beyond. Todd began playing on the New York scene back in 1979 with his band Nitetrain, a trio that clearly reflected Todd's influences—60s bands like Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Fleetwood Mac and other bluesy-rocking-jamming bands. The wave of guitar players that included Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Jimi Hendrix, Michael Bloomfield were and are influential and evident in Todd's style and approach to guitar-playing. His next venture was Troy & the Tornados, a band based in the New York metro area. Todd met two women in this time period that would eventually play a part in his guitar-playing and song-writing experience: Carla Olson of the Textones and Sheryl Crow, at the time an unknown back-up singer. By the late '80s, Sheryl had sat in several times with the Tornados in New York City. Eventually Todd decided to fly to Los Angeles and write with Sheryl and showcase their new band in hopes of a record deal. Nothing came of this particular venture, but these two would find each other again on the same stage just a few years up the road! TODD WOLFE BAND

Ritmi netti, con Musica cruda e onesta. Noi lo chiamiamo Blues infuso dalle radici americane. Un mix di forte personalità e suoni. Un incontro casuale in un negozio di musica di Atlanta, GA, ha riunito i due fondatori, Tom Gray e Mark Johnson. I due, scambiati i numeri di telefono, spesso suonavano insieme regolarmente nei negozi di caffè e barbecue nei dintorni di Atlanta. A Mark è venuto il nome di Delta Moon, dopo un pellegrinaggio per Muddy Waters, vicino a Clarksdale, Mississippi. Dopo l'aggiunta di una sezione ritmica solida, i Delta Moon hanno iniziato a suonare in locali notturni e Festival in tutto il sud, vincendo l'International Blues Challenge di Memphis nel 2003. Nel 2007 il bassista Franher Josep si è unito ai Delta Moon, seguito poi dal batterista Marlon Patton, completando il gruppo di oggi. Etica del lavoro della band sono i costanti tour, sin dal 2012 e oltre, con itinerari programmati per Germania, Italia, U.K., Benelux, Scandinavia, Canada, Stati Uniti e altro. Dopo il primo album dal vivo nel 2013 "Life's a Song", in questi giorni hanno presentato il secondo volume "Turn Around When Possible". DELTA MOON

 

THE RIDES "CAN'T GET ENOUGH"

Ecco il supergruppo blues del 2013. Si chiamano The Rides, e includono Stephen Stills, il tastierista Barry Goldberg nonchè il chitarrista Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Stills definisce i Rides "la blues band dei miei sogni". Il grande progetto (l'album "Can't Get Enough" e subito il lungo tour a seguire) non poteva che nascere dalla stessa idea che, nel lontano 1968, partorì lo storico disco "Super Session" (chi non lo ricorda) con Mike Bloomfield, Al Kooper e il redivivo Stills. Uno dei dischi trà i più attesi dell'anno, cosi raccontato: «È stata un’esperienza magica, uno dei migliori momenti della mia carriera musicale». Così Stephen Stills introduce il progetto Rides, supergruppo nato quasi per caso, mentre lavorava ad alcuni brani nuovi con Barry Goldberg degli Electric Flag. Can’t Get Enough registrato in sette giorni agli East West Studios di Los Angeles, è un eccellente disco di rock-blues moderno, fresco, vibrante e potente, con solo cinque pezzi inediti, mentre i restanti brani sono cover pescate dal passato più o meno remoto. Guidato dal produttore Jerry Harrison, ex Talking Heads, il trio ha messo in fila dieci brani di ottima fattura. THE RIDES

BIG BLIND RAY TRIO "BIG BLIND RAY TRIO"

Il Big Blind Ray Trio è tutto da ascoltare, anche se suona un blues tradizionalmente molto pericoloso. Con sede a Sydney, questo gruppo ha fatto una impressione fin dalla loro nascita, avvenuta alla fine del 2011. Il Big Blind Ray Trio rende omaggio ai suoni e al groove di Bluesmen americani, sia quelli della città, che quelli della campagna, pur mantenendo un interessante fresca energia grezza, e un originalità di linguaggio che è tutta loro. Ray e Beck si sono cosi incontrati mentre lavoravano su un progetto diverso e dopo aver realizzato la chimica musicale che avevano in corpo. Ray  ha genialmente e cosi rapidamente invitato Beck a unirsi a lui per il suo Blues d'avventura. La band non ha perso poi molto tempo, debuttando subito dopo presso il Good God Small Club. Hanno messo su dei spettacoli di maggior successo in luoghi come The Standard, Rock Lily, Moonshine Bar e Camelot. Questi spettacoli sono stati musicati a fianco di artisti come Mojo Juju, Pat Capocci, Papa Pilko e The Binrats. Dopo un paio di cambiamenti Ray e Beck hanno finalmente incontrato Karl che ha completato il triangolo di Big Blind Ray Trio, che è cosi  nato. Dal gennaio 2013 questo trio ha suonato in luoghi come The Vanguard, The Manning Bar e The Columbian. Con l'enorme potente voce di Ray, sostenuta dal design ad alta energia di Karl e di Beck, questo trio offre uno spettacolo estremamente divertente. BIG BLIND RAY TRIO

WAYNE SHARP AND THE SHARP SHOOTER BAND "LIVING WITH THE BLUES"

Wayne Sharp nasce nelle paludi della Louisiana, più a sud di New Orleans, nella cosidetta piccola città di Houma. Il suo amore per la buona musica inizia a formarsi con sua madre. E' evidente che è cresciuto ascoltando le molte scanalature e le melodie che stavano venendo fuori da New Orleans. Spostatosi verso la costa del Mississippi, iniziò poi a suonare professionalmente all'età di 17 anni. Fu qui che incontrò Jaimoe e Lamar Williams del gruppo degli Allman Brothers. Sharp poi si diresse verso la città di Los Angeles per iniziare ha formare la sua band di musica. In quel periodo si assicurò un contratto di produzione per le canzoni che lui aveva già scritto, e contattò gli amici, Jaimoe e Lamar, per unirsi a lui nel progetto. Avevano lasciato la Allman Brothers per unire le forze con Wayne e cosi formare la Band SharpShooter. Firmarono un contratto di sviluppo con la Capitol, per mettere sù un tour insieme e provare su strada il materiale, quando Lamar si ammalò. Passò un anno, e Jaimoe tornò dai fratelli Allman, e Wayne aderi cosi con Elvin Bishop. In Los Angeles, ha avuto l'opportunità di registrare dal vivo con artisti del calibro di Ed Cherney e Andy Johns. Jaimoe, Wayne e un altro partner aprirono una discoteca sulla costa del Mississippi, per circa un anno, per poi ottenere la chiamata ad unirsi con la Michael Burks Alligator Records. Ha iniziato con Michael Burks nel 2000, per oltre 2500 spettacoli con lui, dall'Australia alla Polonia. Racconta, che suonare con Michael è stato davvero un incredibile passaggio, la nostra musica mi ha portato dove ogni musicista vuole andare e arrivare.  WAYNE SHARP

MARK COOK "BACKWOODS CHAOS"

Mark Cook (chitarrista e produttore) è un gran musicista blues, che risiede in Atlanta, GA. Mark è già stato per quattro volte vincitore dei music awards del 'JPFolks', che si tiene ogni anno a Los Angeles, CA. Ha anche ricevuto il Best Blues per l'album dell'anno, e il Best Rock per l'artista strumentale dell'anno. Ha inoltre, poi ricevuto, la Menzione D'onore al concorso internazionale per Songwriter. Mark è un membro votante della Recording Academy. Nato in una famiglia di musicisti, chitarrista chic di blues elettrico, ma sopratutto un gran multi-talento, Mark Cook è inizialmente cresciuto sulla strada. Ha ereditato il bel dono e la passione per la musica, e cioè il  vecchio blues dai genitori, sino a cosi diventare un musicista molto serio, stabilitosi poi in Indiana, all'età di 15 anni. Nel corso del tempo, ha costruito uno studio di registrazione, dove ha progettato, prodotto e registrato il suo CD di debutto, "An Evening With the Blues", nel 2000. L'album, che lo hanno votato come miglior Album Blues dell'anno 2001, che ha vinto per acclamazione. Lo ascoltiamo nell'ultimo album, recentissimo, "Backwoods Chaos", che ci arriva dal profondo dell'animo blues.  MARK COOK
