Il leggendario maestro di pianoforte Henry Gray è morto il 17 febbraio 2020 all'età di 95 anni. Negli anni '50 e '60, Henry è stato una parte cruciale della scena blues di Chicago. Ha suonato su famosi dischi di Howlin ’Wolf, Jimmy Rogers, Jimmy Reed, Little Walter, Billy Boy Arnold, G.L. Crockett, Morris Pejoe e Dusty Brown. È stato uno degli ultimi originali di Chicago. Henry Gray e l'asso dell'armonica Bob Corritore hanno unito le forze nel 1996 con viaggi regolari al nightclub Bob's Phoenix, al Rhythm Rhythm e allo studio di registrazione. Questi spettacoli e sessioni sono continuati fino al 2018, quando Henry non era più in grado di volare per ordine del medico. Questa raccolta fornisce una porzione di 14 canzoni di alcune delle fantastiche sessioni a cui questi due hanno collaborato per un periodo di 22 anni! 'A trio is the place where countless jazz pianists get their start, finding security in the armature provided by a bassist and a drummer and perhaps a sense of direction, too, from a long tradition that began in the music’s early days and continues to evolve in nedirections.Theextraordinarily gifted Alexander Hawkins, by contrast, waited before committing himself to a format so familiar as to represent, for a creative pianist, a considerable test of the imagination.
 Born in Oxford in 1981, Hawkins has been heard in many contexts, among them his own six-piece ensemble, the Ethiopian vibraphonist Mulatu Astatke’s band, the multinational Convergence Quartet, the three-piece Decoy (in which he plays Hammond organ), the quartets of the trumpeter Nick Malcolm, the drummer Steve Davis and the bassist Dominic Lash, as a solo pianist, and recently in duo, quartet and octet environments with Louis Moholo-Moholo. To encounter him at last in a trio (with the bassist Neil Charles and the drummer Tom Skinner) is like hearing the final element of a piece of machinery click into place.

DANNY GREEN TRIO "AFTER THE CALM"

San Diego native Danny Green has managed to carve out a place for himself in the lineup of young jazz artists who have a pulse on keeping the tradition of jazz piano and composition alive while stepping boldly into the future. According to JazzReview.com, “Danny Green is what evolution in jazz is all about, expressing the traits of those that came before him, with a style and panache that is all his own...an individual who expresses what is inside of him.”Green revealed to the world his impressive talents on his 2009 solo debut recording, With You In Mind. The San Diego Tribune reviewed his debut recording and described Green as “Equally adept at jazz, classical and various Brazilian styles…but even in its most intricate moments, his music never sacrifices soul for technique or substance for flash.”  The album received extensive airplay around the globe rising to  on the Jazz Week Charts, and won “Best Jazz Album” at the 2009 San Diego Music Awards. Green began working on With You In Mind after producing the Afro-Cuban Jazz inspired album, Past Due (which featured trumpet, bass, drums, percussion and a very young Danny Green). With You In Mind focused on Brazilian influences cradled in mainstream jazz and classical nuances.In 2012, Green teamed up with Tapestry Records to release his latest album, A Thousand Ways Home. As on With You In Mind, Green's compositions incorporate Brazilian and Latin as well as jazz and classical influences. The core group consists of Green on piano, Justin Grinnell on bass, Julien Cantelm on drums and Tripp Sprague on soprano and tenor saxophone. Green also features an incredibly talented cast of guest artists that include mandolinist Eva Scow on four of the tracks, guitarists Chico Pinheiro, Peter Sprague and Dusty Brough as well as Brazilian vocalist Claudia Villela. The camaraderie shared by the players is obvious. A Thousand Ways Home received numerous rave reviews nationwide, rose to on the Jazz Week Charts, and was voted into KSDS Jazz 88.3’s “Top Ten Jazz Releases of 2012.”

DAVID VEST "ROADHOUSE REVELATION"

Although he now calls Canada home, Maple Blues Award winner David Vest is an authentic, Southern-bred boogie-woogie piano player and blues shouter. Born in Alabama in 1943, David grew up in Birmingham, not far from Tuxedo Junction. He played his first paying gig in 1957, and by the time he opened for Roy Orbison on New Year's Day 1962, he was a seasoned veteran of Gulf Coast roadhouses and honky tonks.At the age of 17, David went on tour with Jerry Woodard and the Esquires, some of whom later became key members of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section and the Muscle Shoals Horns. While still with Woodard, he jammed with Ace Cannon, Bill Black's Combo and the Jimmy Dorsey Band in clubs along the Florida Panhandle, where fellow Alabaman James Harman would soon make his mark.He had seen Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash in the 1950s. He saw Bo Diddley, Jimmy Reed, and John Lee Hooker in the prime of their careers. Sam Cooke, Clyde McPhatter and Hank Ballard, too. About the time he turned 21 he found himself onstage backing Big Joe Turner, who said that David Vest's playing made him feel like he was back home in Kansas City.He had also worked the southern gospel circuit, appearing on programs with the Statesmen and the Blackwood Brothers. His first recording featured the last song written by Alton Delmore. David himself wrote the first songs ever recorded by Tammy Wynette, as detailed in Jimmy McDonough's bio of the country legend. He also dated a sister of the Louvin Brothers, toured with Faron Young (who threatened to kill him), backed Red Foley in a show where all the stars got robbed, worked in a theatre with Fannie Flagg and became the first American artist to record an album in Romania, after his appearance at the Sibiu Jazz Festival.Later David would receive the "direct laying on of hands" from piano legends like Big Walter The Thunderbird and Floyd Dixon. He would tour extensively with Jimmy T99 Nelson and Miss Lavelle White. Katie Webster told him, "I knows it when I hears it."From 2002 through 2006, he shared lead vocals and frontman duties in the Paul deLay Band, culminating in his performance on an award-winning live CD, which reached the Top Ten on Billboard's national blues chart. During his years in Portland, David won five Muddy Awards from the Cascade Blues Association, including Best Keyboard Player.After deLay's untimely death, Vest joined forces with Kenny 'Blues Boss' Wayne and various other pianists, including Ann Rabson, to form the supergroup Northwest Pianorama. FRANCESCO TURRISI "GRIGIO"

Francesco Turrisi has been defined a “musical alchemist” and a “musical polyglot” by the press. He left his native Italy in 1997 to study jazz piano and early music at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, where he obtained a Bachelor and a Master’s degree. Since 2004 he has been collaborating with celebrated early music ensemble L’Arpeggiata. With l’Arpeggiata he has performed at the major early music festivals in Europe and around the world (Turkey, Russia, China) and has recorded for Virgin, Naive and Alpha.Francesco is also the leader and founder of many successful Irish and International groups that experiment pushing the boundaries of contemporary jazz, world music and early music, such as Sarabanda, Tarab, T.R.E., Zahr.He has released two piano trio albums, “Si dolce e’ il Tormento” (“an arresting and consistently beautiful work”,All about Jazz), and “Fotografia” (“lyricism of aching beauty lies embedded throughout Fotografia”All about jazz).He is also the founder of Tarab (a band that experiments with Irish traditional and mediterranean music). THE PETER EDWARDS TRIO "SAFE AND SOUND"

Pianist and composer, Peter Edwards, graduated with a Masters in Jazz from Trinity College of Music in 2009. An alumnus of the Tomorrowʼs Warriors young artist development programme, he has already established a growing reputation as a bandleader, musical director, composer and arranger.He is accompanist for singer Nicola Emmanuelle, directs The Nu Civilisation Orchestra and plays with a variety of bands including ‘Rhythmica’ and the Zara McFarlane band. Peter also collaborates with artists from other disciplines. Most recently he composed 6 pieces for jazz dectet to accompany poetry written and performed by Lemn Sissay MBE at Purcell Room, Southbank Centre. The final movement ‘Whaf if?’ was filmed and broadcast on Channel 4’s ‘3 minute wonder’ series. The film was later featured at the Royal Academy of Arts in January 2010 as part of ‘Earth: Art of a changing world’ exhibition.  PETER EDWARDS

PEGGY DUQUESNEL "ALL I ASK FOR CHRISTMAS"

MAARTJE MEIJER "VIRGO"

Ecco il debutto di Maartje Meijer da Amsterdam: compositrice, pianista e cantante jazz, con l'album "Virgo", con belle apparizioni di Jesse van Ruller, e le voci di Joris Roelofs. Record di jazz moderno influenzato da artisti molto diversi, come Brahms, Randy Newman e Sufjan Stevens.Tutte le canzoni sono scritte da Meijer, tranne una di di Wayne Shorter. Il rilascio del cd è avvenuto presso il Bimhuis di Amsterdam, il 27 ottobre 2013. Maartje Meijer (1985) è stata allevata con il pianoforte classico e ha iniziato la sua carriera musicale al Conservatorio di Utrecht nel 2004. In Utrecht, Maartje ha studiato con la cantante jazz Lydia van Dam. Maartje ha suo proprio trio pianoforte/vocal con Tobias Nijboer e Kaspars Kurdeko, con cui ha registrato il suo CD di debutto. AARON PARKS TRIO "ALIVE IN JAPAN"

Un disco che riprende un concerto tenutosi in Giappone lo scorso Dicembre, dal Trio composto da Aaron Parks, piano, Thomas Morgan, bass e RJ Miller, drums. Nel corso del tour, infatti, hanno fatto musica insieme in uno spettacolo nella città di Mito. Ed è stato registrato sul telefonino di Aaron Parks. Quindi la qualità dell'audio non può essere hifi, ma nemmeno troppo malandato, ma accettabile per una musica jazz di qualità. Inoltre è stato anche fatto un lavoro di mastering per aumentare le frequenze basse, e per essere condiviso da tutti, per far si che questa splendida documentazione non andasse persa. PASCAL LE BOEUF "PASCAL'S TRIANGLE"

Un uomo del Rinascimento del XXI secolo. Egli ha fatto breccia sia nei mondi della musica classica, che indie-rock e jazz. Con suo fratello gemello Remy, ha vinto molti primi premi in vari concorsi internazionali di songwriting. Il pianista Pascal Le Boeuf ha prodotto un elegante nuovo album, dal titolo "Pascal's Triangle", che di fatto dispone di un ritmo di propulsione avanzato, dato dal team composto dal bassista Linda Oh e il batterista Justin Brown. Dopo 9 anni esibendosi in NYC, con tre album, innumerevoli progetti di studio e molti diversi spettacoli in tutto il mondo, Pascal si è affermato come una figura di spicco nella prossima generazione di artisti jazz. Salutato dalla rivista critica DownBeat, come un forte elemento percussivo, che si combina con un acuto senso della dinamica. Le Boeuf persegue un ideale moderno in un mondo fatto senza confini. C'è almeno altrettanto Debussy evidente nel suo stile compositivo di quanto vi è Bill Evans. CLARE TEAL & GRANT WINDSOR "AND SO IT GOES"

And So It Goes è una bella raccolta di canzoni senza tempo, registrato in un ambiente intimo da Clare Teal e Grant Windsor. Clare Teal, nata nello Yorkshire è una delle cantanti jazz britanniche, di maggior successo femminile. Gran vocalista, è stata interessata al jazz fin dalla più tenera età. Ha preso ad  interesarsi a cantanti come Ella Fitzgerald, prendendo poi lezioni di organo e clarinetto.  E sin  dall'inizio della sua carriera professionale jazz, avvenuta nel 1995, Teal ha pubblicato diversi album e vinto molti premi, tra cui la cantante jazz della BBC nell'anno 2006. In quest'album è in splendido duetto con Grant Windsor, pianista, compositore e direttore d'orchestra di Perth, dell' Australia occidentale. Egli iniziò i suoi studi sul flauto, dove ottenne un posto nell'Orchestra di fiati di fama nazionale sin dall'età di 14 anni. Mentre studiava flauto, Grant ha insegnato pianoforte e iniziato a comporre allo stesso tempo. Ha suonato con molti artisti, tra cui Frank Foster, Sandy Evans, Sarah e Leila Petronio, Don Burrows, James Morrison, Janet Seidel e Randy Brecker.  CLARE TEAL

SUNNA GUNNLAUGS " DISTILLED"

Un disco impressionante nel suo genere, "Distilled", del pianista  Islandandese Gunnlaug Sunna e il suo Trio jazz, dove riescono nel combinare l'eleganza dell'approccio del jazz europeo, con le influenze americane. Infatti, egli è un jazzista influenzato da pianisti come Bill Evans e Keith Jarrett, così come i musicisti scandinavi, Bobo Stenson e Jon Balke. Un disco, in cui sia le note atmosfere cool che la qualità meditativa, si disegnano proprio sulle melodie del folk islandese. Quindi s'intende che Gunnlaug, ha beneficiato enormemente del suo tempo negli anni novanta, studiando, osservando ed esibendosi in NYC, facendo diversi album dal 1997, che invariabilmente hanno cosi avuto la partecipazione di Drew Gress, Tony Malaby, Loren Stillman ed Eivind Opsvik. Questo è il prodotto di un artista maturo, essendo l'ottavo rilascio dei Gunnlaug, ma solo il 3°album del trio. Gunnlaug è magistrale, mette un sacco di aria contemplativa in queste canzoni, piacevoli armonie e ritmi fluidi. Molto intraprendente, nelle sue oscillazioni di luce, dove l'armonia sottostante è inconfondibile, e il suo stato di animo astratto, rimane intatto nel suo lirismo rilassato. SUNNA GUNNLAUGS

JOHN MEDESKI "A DIFFERENT TIME"

A Different Time, è una collezione più introspettiva e meditativa di quando potrebbero aspettarsi gli appassionati di musica vivace. Composto principalmente da nuove composizioni di Medeski e da sue improvvisazioni, con riferimenti ad una conoscenza spirituale e una canzone di Willie Nelson, aggiunto nel mix, l'album presenta un lato molto diverso dell'arte prodigiosa di Medeski. " La musica nasce sulla creazione di una vibrazione, di una energia ", dice John Medeski. " È guarigione e trasformazione allo stessissimo tempo ". Essendo lui multistrumentista, quindi tastierista, nonchè produttore e collaboratore con innumerevoli e considerevoli altri artisti, Medeski ha incanalato questa forza trasformativa con potere perturbante e immaginazione. E' abile compositore e improvvisatore sia da pianoforte acustico che elettrico, organo Hammond e clarinetto. Non ha mai separato la sua musica in categorie, in un dato momento può essere classificato come funk, jazz, moderno, classico o rock. Egli nacque nel Kentucky, ma cresciuto in Florida, a partire lezioni di pianoforte alla tenera età di cinque anni. Nella sua adolescenza fece parte di un trio chiamato Emergency.  JOHN MEDESKI

BEEGIE ADAIR "SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY"

"Sentimental Journey" è appunto un viaggio molto sentimentale del trio jazzistico formato dalla musicista Beegie Adair's al pianoforte, il bassista Roger Spencer e il batterista Chris Brown. Assoli tinti di pianoforte, per un tranquillo, sereno e dolce Romanticismo, raccolta di gemme da un epoca conosciuta, quale la famosa seconda guerra mondiale. Ventiquattro melodiche canzoni in stile vintage, necessarie per poter catturare l'attenzione di un pubblico jazz. Beegie Adair, 74 anni, è una pianista jazz, con base a Nashville, ed è leggermente una delle jazziste più contemporanee. Una musicista con una tecnica impeccabile, oltre ad avere  una sana e profonda conoscenza del vasto repertorio jazzistico, avendo dalle sue, una innata tendenza ad oscillare nelle esecuzioni, e la  sua rara capacità di comunicare il cuore e l'anima di un brano per gli ascoltatori. Le sue interpretazioni (e che è un generoso termine) sono concise, simmetriche, generiche e semplicemente impersonale.
